Moleskine 18 Percent Gray Card Hack

January 23, 2005

Sure, I could have bought an 18% gray card from Wolf Camera for around fifty cents or something, but that wouldn’t be any fun and besides I wouldn’t have been able to give it a cool name like: Moleskine 18% Gray Card Hack.

I have included a copy of the image I used to make my gray card. I don’t think it is exactly 18% gray but I feel like the photos I took with it are testament to the fact that it works. I may rework the card later.

18% Gray card in my Kodak PhotoguideI have been testing my new camera, Fuji Finepix S5100, and I noticed that the AUTO setting doesn’t always yield the best picture. In comparing a set of bracketed photographs with one taken while the camera was set at auto, I could tell that, normally the auto settings made the shot look washed out.

All I did was take a jpeg that someone claimed was 18% gray, grab a sample, and make a 3x5 image filled with that sample. I then printed the image, cut it out, and glued it to the back of a 3x5 index card.

I picked 3x5 becase that is the size index card that fits in a pocket Moleskine.
