Subtraction: The Mini-Binder Sketchbook System

SketchbookThere’s a bit of throwback enthusiasm going on right now among the otherwise digitally inclined for the mystique of Moleskine.
These decidedly analog, leather-bound notebooks and sketchbooks are a
counterpoint to the foundering PDA market: they are idea keepers and
organizers that can capture fluid, organic meanderings of the brain in
a way that neither the Palm OS nor the Pocket PC can hope to
approximate. What’s more, rather than losing their value and
technological currency with age, they are built to grow more precious
with repeated use, as their owners invest ever more care and time into
filling their pages.

I don’t know about you, but number one on my all-time wish list is to learn how to make pancakes with Bruce Willis. Of course I would have to take my mom just so I could watch her blush every time I mention that one floating scene in The Color of Night.

“The key to any good pancake or French toast recipe is to begin with a very hot griddle. Once you get the griddle hot, back the heat down a little and completely cover the surface with butter. (Butter should not blacken if so turn down the griddle). I use a lot butter here. I also microwave a cube in a coffee cup and mix part of it into the main ingredients. Using the rest for the griddle and the upcoming hotcakes.”

Those who frequent the alt.binaries.drwho Usenet newsgroup found a suprise yesterday: the entire first episode of the new season of Doctor Who, titled “Rose,” was posted as an AVI file called “Rose1.AVI,” around 350 megabytes in length. Already many fans have downloaded the file and viewed the episode, and it has been generally well-received. The file is also being exchanged with bittorrent.

Word is that Sci-Fi Channel declined to acquire this new DOCTOR WHO series. And I can see why. It’s too damned English. As Rich Johnston said to me tonight, it’s your actual English family sci-fi show. There’s no way it’d fit on Sci-Fi. I imagine, to be honest, it’s going to bypass much of the American audience, and possibly even the gap between my generation and my daughter’s generation.
