One writer’s checklist.

July 5, 2005

Some wise words on writing.

…I remember in the Compuserve Writers Forum a gadfly named Alex Keegan who ran a private writers group. They had developed something called The Grid that they used to critique against every story the members submitted. I found a copy of it here. The goal is to score over 130+; a description of the grid system is here.

  1. Just like to say that the grid you reference is a crude rip-off of the grid I developed and improved over 7 years.

I was editor of World Wide Writers for its first five issues and they used my grid. When I left this grid appeared.

Firstly, any grid must be weighted according to the genre being assessed. I teach serious general fiction and literary fiction so my grid is stornger on character and theme, for example. A grid fro crime writers would need a different weighting.

Another warning. The grid is NOt a replacement for brain and it is not that useful being used alone. It’s for GROUP WORK. The reason for numbers is to allow for easy comparison of opinions and averaging of opinions.

  2. I simply search, evaluate, and post. The text in my post is a quote from the site I’m linking too.

I make no representation that I agree with the original document.

If you would like to provide a link to your improved grid I will post it here.
