Lumix FZ5

lumix.jpg

Lumix come in a number of models. I use the FZ-5, which is much smaller in size than the latest model, the FZ-30. The smaller FZ-5 does not do RAW files (the FZ-30 does), but I prefer its compact size and don’t usually need the massive file sizes of RAW. I can’t fit the Lumix into my pants pocket, but it will sit in my jacket pocket or any small bag I carry. The zoom is both macro and telescopic, an old SRL ability I am so happy to have back. Five meg resolution is plenty. It’ll take a 1 gig memory card. The camera lights up fast. Navigation of controls is fine. And to top it off, this little wonder is comparatively cheap with a street price below $350 — a third of what the Rebel would cost.

Make your own transparent screen–without cheating.

April 18, 2005

These shots are all over the internet right now: a person posts a digital photograph of their computer and the desktop picture displayed on the screen seems to mimic what is behind it so faithfully that it appears that the screen is actually transparent. There are several shots I’ve seen that are done so well that you’d swear that the photographer simply removed the LCD and top bezel of his PowerBook. But these people assure me that they have perfectly lined up these shots with no fakery…

brevity.org — Lickr: Flickr, without the Flash
Flickr is a popular photo hosting service that uses embedded Flash files as part of their interface. On every page, there will be a little delay while a new Flash file loads.

Lickr removes the need for Flash. It runs within the web browser Firefox, stripping the Flash before the user can even see it, and replacing it with an equivalent interface in pure HTML and Javascript.

DIY Photography

This is a great idea, I only wish that the author had provided more details on the construction instead of leaving my to guess. Looking at the pictures though, it seems pretty simple.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to do some Ring Flash photography with my models. Something that looks 90’s fashion style stuff. Most of the ring flashes out there are very expensive. You can get some decently priced versions (~100) on ebay, but as ring flashes are typically for macro photography, most battery powered versions really are only good for, macro-photography. I was looking for something that could work more for fashion.

Fun Google hack with Sony Digital Cameras - Engadget - www.engadget.com
Here’s a fun thing to play around with, if you’re bored at 3am. Most Sony digital cameras start saving photos with the following name “DSC00001.JPG” and a lot of people take these photos and upload them to the web, where the all-knowing, all-seeing Google later catalogs all of them. So by clicking this link you can see the first photo taken by someone with their new camera or newly formatted card for some cameras, this is what it looks like when thousands of Sony cameras lose their photo-virginity.

Where to start? Well, while on a trip to Tokyo, Flickr user Matt took the picture to the left. It’s a neat “meta” picture of an interesting looking phototgrapher taking a picture of an interesting bunch of teenagers in hip Harajuku putting on some sort of performance. A nice photograph. (Matt took a few more of these meta pictures while in Harajuku .)

But then… He posted the photo to Flickr, where someone saw it and recognized the interesting looking photographer from her tattoo. He sent her a link to Matt’s photo, she joined Flickr and posted the photo (below left) she was taking at the time Matt took his photo! (CherryVega posted a wonderful collection of photos, including this one, that she took in the Tokyo Streets.)
